Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
