Defense Department Report Finds Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US troops if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
